New Research Links Microplastic Accumulation to Elevated Pressure in Glaucoma

For the first time, scientists have discovered microplastics embedded in the trabecular meshwork—the eye’s delicate drainage system responsible for regulating internal eye pressure.

Researchers examined tissue from 20 patients undergoing glaucoma surgery and found microplastics in every single sample. The most common plastics included polyamide, PVC, and polypropylene—materials widely used in clothing, packaging, household products, and consumer goods. Nearly 77% of the particles measured less than 50 microns, making them small enough to collect within the eye’s microscopic drainage pathways.

The most concerning finding was that patients with the greatest amount of microplastic accumulation also had the highest intraocular pressure. This relationship remained strong even after researchers accounted for age and glaucoma medication use.

Elevated eye pressure is one of the most important risk factors for glaucoma, a leading cause of permanent blindness. It is also one of the most common causes of blindness in the world.  Although this study does not yet prove that microplastics cause glaucoma, it raises a serious new possibility: plastic particles may become trapped in the eye’s drainage system, contribute to inflammation or obstruction, and interfere with the eye’s ability to control pressure.  Scientists and Ophthalmologists have not found a common cause for most glaucoma.

This landmark research suggests that microplastic pollution may reach even the most delicate structures of the human eye—and may play a previously unrecognized role in vision-threatening disease.
